Why Do We Compete?

I started swimming competitively at the age of four. I had a great swim coach (Jim Barton) who mentored and taught our swim team how to value and support one another. The older kids took care of the littles at meets. It felt like a family. And we won all kinds of championships; but when I think back to then, I just remember hanging out with the team, snuggled together, singing songs, listening to music and talking and laughing– not winning or even swimming. We were truly a team. We won, we were nationally ranked, but we did it TOGETHER.

Is this what you picture when you think of competing?
